About Peter J. DeTroy, III
The DeTroy Award
Over the course of his remarkable career, Peter J. DeTroy, III became one of the state’s most accomplished and respected lawyers. A practicing lawyer in Maine from 1972 until his untimely death in 2016, Peter was a founding partner of the law firm Norman Hanson Detroy, LLC and a selfless community leader. He served on a number of committees devoted to ensuring that the practice of law was inclusive, without discrimination, and without unnecessary barriers to young lawyers eager to learn. As a problem-solver, a counselor, and a zealous protector and defender of rights, Peter’s empathy, passion, trustworthiness, integrity, and thoughtfulness were reflected in every case he handled.

The DeTroy Award is presented yearly and honors an individual dedicated to advancing justice in Maine by working to remove barriers for people who are vulnerable. Recipients exemplify the same selfless spirit as Peter DeTroy, III, whose own contributions in these areas, both public and private, were made not for recognition, but to further dignity and humanity for individuals and society as whole.
