Behind Every Case is a Person
Fifteen thousand three hundred seventy-three. No matter the subject, 15,373 is a head spinning number. And, when 15,373 represents the number of cases handled by one the six civil legal aid providers, we can picture the varying, critical situations that are behind a person’s call for help .
Let’s learn about one person’s situation that the Volunteer Lawyers Project shared with us recently:
“Holly” is a domestic violence survivor who also lives with a traumatic brain injury.
She contacted VLP after her former boyfriend brought a partition action against her to force the sale of the home in which she was living. VLP referred her to a volunteer attorney for representation. Litigation resolved favorably for her at mediation. Even still, there were many challenges in implementing that agreement (including high interest rates and a wild housing market). Yet, Holly was ultimately able to keep her home, thanks to the attorney’s help.
In an email to her team at VLP, Holly wrote, “I wanted to let you know that the representation I was provided from the VLP was a life saver…If only more people cared about their fellow humans the world would be a better place. Thank you so much for the service you do for Mainers.”
One person. One story. Legal issues resolved with care. Hope restored.
